Worked in library media center for 1 hour, 30 minutes

o Today I created a resource list for a social studies teacher who requested that it be made for an upcoming project they are doing on persuasive writing where they compare Japanese internment camps to the way Muslim Americans were treated following September 11th with the creation of things like the Patriot Act.

o To create this original list I used our online library catalog and searched for books using key words and concepts. Then, I transferred selected books onto a Microsoft Word document and then also added appropriate Internet websites and sources from the library resources homepage that could help direct students in their research. Next week when students begin this research essay, Ms. Stamm would like me to introduce this sheet to the students and explain all of the helpful resources they can utilize during this project.

o While creating this particular resource list, one thing I noticed was that it was difficult to find scholarly and/or accurate information/websites on the Patriot Act. This is a downside when working with newer historical information.

Worked in library media center for 1 hour

o As a follow up to the work I did yesterday pulling books from the shelves for the project on social issues in America, I created a resource list through our online catalog. Unlike previous times when I created similar lists, I had already pulled the books and had them physically before me. So, I used the checkout scanner and created a resource list by just scanning the barcode. I actually preferred this method when creating the resource list because it allowed me to physically see the titles that I was adding to the list and also seemed less time consuming overall.

o In addition, today I observed Ms. Stamm teaching to both a health class on where to find resources in the library for their projects and also teaching to a Freshman English class how to identify credible sources while conducting research. I was glad to see that once in the library media center I will still be able to instruct others on the use or resources and technology.

Worked in library media center for 1 hour

o In preparation for a project that the American Society teacher is starting tomorrow, I was asked to look through the book catalog and also on the shelves themselves and pull books that were relevant for a project on social issues in America.

o One tool that really helped me in this task was the use of a reference book entitled: Encyclopedia of American Social Movements edited by Immanuel Ness from 2004 because this reference book allowed me to get a general idea of some topic areas to focus my search on for books to pull for this project.

Worked in library media center for 1 hour

o Today, I rechecked the list of books that were being ordered by our Library Media Center for the month of February. To do this, I had a list of the selected books and doubled checked if our library had these titles on school’s book catalog. Additionally, to make sure nothing had been previously ordered, but not yet come in, I checked the books we were ordering on a master list of the last group of books ordered.

o Additionally, when the social studies teacher came in to begin her Hot and Cold War project, I directed students, in a brief presentation, to the useful resources both in the library and online through our library website.

Worked in library media center for 1 hour, 30 minutes

o Today I spent some time working on the list of reference titles that were not found using Titlesource and went to look for these titles on the publisher’s website. I was able to find a few of these. The rest of this work was already completed by another librarian.

o I also began working on a new project that we are starting in the library next week on the Hot and Cold wars. Basically, students are to research a given topic from this time period and then create a PowerPoint presentation based on research conducted using various sources. So, today I used a book list that already existed for this project and pulled all of the reference books that this teacher wanted made available to her students.

o Additionally, there is an accompanied website handout that gives students links for additional research. So, since this handout had not been updated in awhile, Ms. Stamm had me take off sites that are no longer accessible and add others that I found that were useful but not already on the list.

Worked in library media center for 1 hour, 30 minutes

o Based on the weeding of the reference section of the Tremper High School Library Media Center that I conducted last week, I used the jobber Titlesource3 from Baker and Taylor to work on selecting and ordering these updated reference materials.

o One problem that I ran into was finding updated titles of the same materials. I talked with Ms. Stamm about this problem and she explained that with this issue it is sometimes necessary to go right to the publisher to find the right edition of a title. While this was more time consuming, I was able to located additional materials that were not found by using the Tremper High School library catalog and looked up those titles that were not found using Titlesource 3.

o Next time I work in the library, my job is to look for these specific titles that were not located on Titlesource3 by going directly to the publisher’s website.

Worked in library media center for 1 hour, 30 minutes

o Today I helped the library prepare for a meeting of the members of the Battle of the Books from both Tremper High School and the other local high school, Bradford High School, which is being held today after school.

o One thing that I did was I helped put together the Jeopardy game that the Battle of the Books members will be playing. Overall, I found the different tasks I was asked to do with the preparation to be fun. This was also an interesting idea that allowed me to get an idea about what it is like to organize outreach programs that are initiated by the library media center.
