Worked in library media center for 1 hour

o Today I worked once again with the Library Secretary, Debbie, to check in new books and DVDs into the library. Basically, to do this process, we first checked some materials into the catalog by scanning them into the catalog. Then, we had to stamp the date on the inside cover as a way to help with the weeding of materials over the years.

o Finally, using a spreadsheet list, I had to manually write in the call numbers, which will then be entered into the computer system by Debbie. In addition, if a teacher had requested the item, we prepared a sheet, which will be given to the teacher, which said the material was now in the library and where it can be found. Overall, while this process was fairly easy to do, it was very time consuming, especially considering the fact that I only completed this task with a small sample of new materials.

Worked in library media center for 1 hour

o Today I worked with Ms. Stamm on a cart of new books that had been checked into the library. She wanted me to assign the books to an appropriate bibliography list. Ms. Stamm pointed out that not every book would fit in one of the lists the library had, and that that was alright.

o After I made the selections, Ms. Stamm went over the decisions I made and told me which ones she agreed with and those she felt were not completely correct and where she would put the books instead. Again, another valuable learning experience.

o Worked in library media center for 1 hour, 30 minutes

o Today I worked to cooperatively plan an upcoming project for a social studies class on popular culture in the 1950s and 1960s with the teacher using this project.

o First, working with the teacher using this project, we filled out the Tremper Library Unit Planning Guide. Then we completed a list of books and other reference materials that will be pulled and put on a cart for student use. Once this list was completed, I went around the library and found the selected materials and even added additional useful titles to the list that I saw while pulling books. Overall, this was a good experience at cooperatively working with a teacher on a project that is being completed in the library.

Worked in library media center for 1 hour, 30 minutes

o Today I had the unique opportunity to help set up the traveling book fair that had come to Tremper High School this week. Basically, this week the book fair has been going on in the library, but today, we had to move all of the materials, displays, etc. down to the cafeteria for parents and students to shop at during the parent teacher conferences.

o Overall, I found this to be an interesting experience with an outreach activity that our library media center was running. In particular, I enjoyed having some say in how materials were displayed and where. In addition, I was able to discuss with Ms. Stamm both the benefits (mainly how the library will get to keep about 40% of the profit) and the drawbacks of doing such an activity.

Worked in library media center for 1 hour

o Today I worked with Debbie, the Library Media Secretary. She showed me how to sort new magazines, check them off, put on barcodes, and a label stating its date. Also, Debbie explained to me how to enter the new magazines into the online catalog according to the established cataloging practice at Tremper and then I was given the opportunity to do so. We also went over how periodicals are ordered for the library and then processed and checked in once they arrive.

o In addition Debbie explained to me how Instructional Media Center (IMC) at the Educational Support Center (ESC) in Kenosha is responsible for creating all of the bar codes and sending them, once processed, to the Tremper LMC.
