Worked in library media center for 1 hour
o Today, I continued to help ordering materials for the library. Ms. Stamm introduced me to Titlewave today and showed me how to order things from this jobber. The focus on what I ordered today was AV/DVD materials, which had previously been selected. Once again, I found this process to be fun and interesting. I was especially interested to learn that you have to really monitor the different editions of videos that are put out with things like special features because this can greatly alter the overall price. Similar to the Baker & Taylor online ordering site, the Follett site was also user friendly.

Worked in library media center for 1 hour, 30 minutes
o My task for today was to actually purchase the titles (not including AV/DVD materials) that I had selected previously on January 14th when I went through two publications: Booklist (Vol. 106, No.8 from 12/15/09) and School Library Journal (December 2009). Using Post-it notes, I had marked pages on which I found materials I thought might be of interest to students. The by the item itself, I made my initials. I then checked the library catalog to confirm that we did not already own any of the titles.
o Ms. Stamm then reviewed my selections and today she allowed me to create a cart on Baker and Taylor’s website: www.btol.com using their program Titlesource3. We titled my cart “TRJenny’s Cart” and Ms. Stamm plans to make a final review of its contents before ordering. I then was able to select items based on what I had already found. Some titles were not yet available and for the type of book, Ms. Stamm wanted me to look for paperback if they were for “fun reading” and hardback if the title was either nonfiction of part of the curriculum. In some cases, books considered “fun reading” were only offered in hardcover, which Ms. Stamm approved because they were newer titles.
o Overall, I was able to go through my entire list and, in the end, 22 titles were ordered for a cost of $352.48, as opposed to the list price total of $514.67.

Worked in library media center for 1 hour, 30 minutes
o Today I finished weeding the reference section of the Tremper High School Library Media Center. Basically, I slowly made my way through the rest of the reference area examining titles that were older or falling apart. One thing that I tried to focus on was what needed to be updated because they are titles that are frequently used because they are a part of the curriculum. The other area I really focused on were titles that would either need updating entirely or through the addition of newer volumes that contain more up-to-date information.
o While this process is slow and tedious and took a little over 3 hours to complete, I found weeding to be interesting and fun. A task for me later this week is to use the jobber Titlesource3 from Baker and Taylor to work on selecting and ordering these updated reference materials.

o Today I worked to weed the reference section. The reference area makes up quite a bit of the Tremper High School Library Media Center. One thing that I tired to focus on what the need to update titles that were frequently used because they are a part of the curriculum. For example, in the series on presidents, our library only goes up to a volume on the Clinton Years, so by now there should be another volume that could be ordered on the Bush years.
o Overall, this process is slow and tedious and I was only able to weed half of the reference section today. Tomorrow I plan to try and finish this process.

Worked in media center for 1 hour, 30 minutes
o Today I worked in the library with the Ruth Stamm the head librarian. Today she spoke with me about the process that she goes through in selecting materials to be purchased for the library. She then showed me the stack of magazines that she receives and has to go through to help her with the purchasing process.
o My task for today was to go through two of these publications: Booklist (Vol. 106, No.8 from 12/15/09) and School Library Journal (December 2009) and looked through each. Using Post-it notes, I marked pages on which I found materials I thought might be of interest to students. The by the item itself, I made my initials.
o Finally, using the Tremper High School library catalog, I checked to make sure that we did not already have any of these titles in our library. Ms. Stamm plans to review my selections and make a final decision concerning purchases to be made.
o This was a pretty time consuming yet interesting task and I really enjoyed having a chance to help in the selection process. Ms. Stamm says that this is a task that she typically does not have time to do at work and usually takes them home.

Worked in media center for 1 hour, 30 minutes
o Today I stepped out of the library and into the media center and began to observe Chuck Romano, who is the Instructional Technology Instructor. Because Tremper is so large, the job of head library media specialist is split up among two people.
o Today I basically shadowed him around and was quite surprised by how intense that the media center itself can be. The first thing that they had me do was pick up the AV cart from a presentation that was made in the auditorium and then I took the cart to a guidance counselor and showed him how to use the projector for a presentation he was going to be giving. After that, I just did little tasks that Mr. Romano wanted me to do and he also discussed with me some of the challenges that he faces. It was interesting to see how intense the media center can be and how much gets down. Overall, I found this job to be a bit quicker paced than the job of the library media specialist and I am excited to see what I am able to do the next time I am in the media center.

Worked in library media center for 1 hour, 30 minutes
o Today I continued creating a “Pathfinder” for a project on popular culture in the 1950s and 1960s for a U.S. history class.
•The first thing that I did today was I finished creating a booklist on the online catalog of books contained in the library that students could use for the project. This list was created by doing a series of keyword searches on the Tremper catalog.
•Then, I explored the books in the reference section to guide me in my search for additional resources. Out of these sources I was able to compile a list of topic areas. I also began to create a list of useful online resources that students could utilize while creating their PowerPoints on their popular culture topic.

Worked in library media center for 1 hour, 30 minutes
o In the library today, I finished my work on creating a bibliography for a specific time period for a AP World History class. To complete this task, today I did the following:
• After evaluating the books, I continued to pull the ones I felt met the requirements and showed them to the librarian to see if she agreed.
• Finally, I sorted though the list and divided the books by time period and subject area before creating the final version of the bibliography.

o In the library today, I continued my work on creating a bibliography for a specific time period for a AP World History class. To complete this task, today I did the following:
• Using a previously made bibliography for AP World History, I did a combination of personally pulling books on the list and looking at these books in the library themselves and also looking them up in the catalog and on review sites.
• What I focused on in my search was whether or not each item on the list was scholarly in nature. I did this because the teacher requested that books on the list be credible with good sources. This task, in itself was time consuming, but I was able to utilize my history background while determining the value of each book included.

Worked in the Library Media Center for 1 hour, 30 minutes
The focus of my work with the head librarian was on a project that a world history teacher is having her students do. The tasks that I worked on were as follows:
o Complied a list of the most popular holidays for each of the five major religions.
o To complete this task, I used several websites to find a list of the general, most popular holidays. I then compared sites to narrow this list down to the most popular. Having finished this, I crosschecked this list with an encyclopedia on religious holidays that the Tremper High School library had.
