Worked in the Library Media Center for 5 hours

Today was my first day of my elementary library school experience. I was at Brass Community School in Kenosha. Today, much of the time was spent orienting myself with the library and the location of various resources. My cooperating librarian, Ms. Skold, also discussed some of the things we would be doing while I am working with her.

I read stories to the pre-kindergarten and pre-first grade students and spent time getting used to asking the younger students questions and creating discussions during the reading. I also gain experience with checking in and out library materials using the Destiny program. This was a little different from high school because for the younger students, who leave their books in the classroom, we checked the books out under the name of their teacher.

In addition to working with the younger students, I also first observed a lesson with 4th graders that my cooperating librarian, Mrs. Skold, did concerning the use of encyclopedias. The lesson itself had me first explain to students how to actually use an encyclopedia and then each student received a sheet with five questions that they needed to use encyclopedia volumes to find the answer, making it similar to a scavenger hunt. Finally, we also had a second grade group come in and we did a dictionary activity with them.
