Worked in the Library Media Center for 5 hours

Today was my first day at the other elementary school where I am doing hours, Whittier Elementary School in Kenosha. Similar to yesterday at the other school, much of the time was spent orienting myself with the library and the location of various resources. My cooperating librarian, Ms. Skold, also discussed with me how circulation and the ordering/receiving of library materials works within the elementary library. One issue we discussed was the fact that at Whittier, the collection includes some titles that have multiple copies within the library and whether or not this is necessary, particularly for easy reading books.

We had two 4th grade classes come into the library and they did a lesson that I created on using dictionaries and learning the difference between the words persuade, inform, and entertain. Today, for the first part of the lesson, we first discussed what a dictionary is and how it is used. We then practiced using the dictionary to look up a word that someone in the class suggested. Next, we had a brief discussion and speculated what the words persuade, inform, and entertain meant. Finally, students used the dictionaries to look up and write out the definitions to each word. We will conclude this lesson next Wednesday. In addition, we also had two 1st grade and two kindergarten classes come in and all of these groups were read a story and then we checked out books.
